In partnership with Well London, Aardvark Recycling and a number of local resident volunteers we are launching a community food coop project. Every week we will provide a fresh selection of fruit and vegetables for you to purchase. Come along for our launch next Friday 26^th to see what it’s all about.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO VOLUNTEER?
We are looking for volunteers to get involved in this very exciting local project; if you have some free time and would like to gain some experience helping to run a local project, please email foodcoop@aardvarkrecycling.org.uk

Some of the exciting ways to get involved:

• Guide- Join our steering group to help us design and deliver some of the projects. We have regular tea and healthy cake tasting at these meetings
• Train
  We can provide arts training:  portfolio reviews for young people aged 14- 25 and specific training of your choice
  Many of the projects have trainee and volunteer posts attached. This can be part of your current studies, part of career development, or an interest to pursue

• Record- Help us create a Big tea pamphlet full of ideas, photos of workshops, recipes, memories, drawings, creative writing, for distribution in October 2010. Help us photograph and film some of the events to show at The Big Tea party in September.

• Training and Record: no dates- just get in touch with us!
• Steering Group meeting: 17^th February and March 24^th , 10am at 3-6  Beale House, Lingham Street, SW9 9HG. No booking required.
• Reasons to Be Cheerful workshop; Wellbeing and happiness cart: 8^th march at Larkhall One O’Clock Club as part of Women’s International Day Event, Larkhall park; 11- 1:30. Come and make your own wellbeing kit. No booking required drop- in.
• Artful Food Sculptures and edible Jewellery workshop: 16^th March Larkhall One O’Clock Club, Larkhall Park. This is for children under 5 and their carers. No booking required drop- in.
• Textile and craft workshops: end of March at St, John’s Church. This is for older people. Date to be confirmed.
• Memory Soup: end of March. Location tbc. Making soup and bread whilst reminiscing on food and recipes and related topics. For older people.

Coming in April!

• The Fabric of Life- a 10 session course for Women that explores self-development and textile craft: 23^rd April at 110 Union Road. This project is for women only. Crèche facility available. Booking essentia (Each session is 2 hours long)

• Dance classes for all ages

• Photo walk- Urban Landscape

Saturday May 29^th and 5^th June ages 5-11 with carer

Photographic walk around larkhall including OASIS nature club. Will be synthesised over 2 weeks to develop a poster campaign and invite for the big tea party event (September 2010).

Oasis staff members show people how to start their own boxes on the estate

Residents asked to bring their window boxes to decorate and start up with Oasis in a gazebo on the estate

Mosaic little ceramic pots and plant up  (with Jewels arts group)

Brixton Low Carbon Zone – Waste Prevention Adviser

Part-time, 20 hours per week, £8,000-8,980 pa (depending on experience)

Funded from Lambeth Council’s Low Carbon Zone (LCZ) grant, this is a new opportunity for a fixed contract until March 2012.   The aim of this new post is to:

• increase environmental sustainability and reduce the overall carbon footprint of the Brixton Low Carbon Zone (LCZ)
• work in the community within the Brixton LCZ to increase participation in waste prevention, reuse, recycling and composting schemes.
• assist in the delivery of projects which lead to improvements in the quality of life of residents and contribute to the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of Lambeth.
• influence behavioural change through education and promotion.

12.00: ‘I hate Cabbage!’ – delicious cabbage tasting – we challenge you to taste different cabbage recipes and find at least one you like!

12.00: Seasonal Soup – learn the recipe of an easy, cheap, seasonal soup made with local ingredients

Time to be confirmed (possibly 3.00): Wildfood tasting – dishes using wild food from around Brixton

All day projects

Food mapping project – add your favourite suppliers to the online map, so people can find sources to help build up a sustainable food supply for Brixton, and minimize food waste from packaging.

Brixton Food and Growing Group Program– find out about the current program.

Focus on Food Waste (with ‘Brixton Remade’ shop next door to the Community Shop) – exact details to be confirmed, but will include some or all of the following:

• Food waste and minimizing food packaging – test yourself in our Zero Food Waste quiz,
• Packaging Reuse Ideas – exhibition of ideas for reusing packaging
• Supermarket versus Local Shopping – what’s the difference in packaging waste for a typical shopping bag
• Stock from Vegetable Peelings
• Composting and Wormery – find out about composting and see a wormery in action
• To bring a cabbage dish for the ‘I Hate Cabbage’ challenge (ideally cooked earlier and brought warm or for us to reheat)
• To update the online map with food related items on the day
• To prepare the exhibitions during the week and on Saturday morning
• To help generally and explain what the Food and Growing Group is doing (there will be a display about this)

Overall Market Programme

Kicking off at 11am with an under-11s cake designing competition, there will be cook-offs, locally-produced freebies and two brand new restaurant openings. Check out the shops, vintage boutiques, galleries, cafes and more; play the Brixton geo piano and pick up some new food tips along the way.

5,000 people will be fed from food that would have otherwise been wasted, either surplus produce or mis-fit veg apparently not fit for our consumption. Aardvark Recycling will also be getting involved and collecting all the food waste and staff will be volunteering on the day.

 There’ll be loads going on including celebrity chef demos so come along to eat or sign up to help volunteer on the day ….
