A European funding award to the organisation has paid for the installation of two in-vessel composters at the Camberwell site. The resultant high quality compost is available for schools, parks and gardeners to use.

An Aardvark spokesperson said: “From the collection of food waste from local estates we are able to produce a great quality of compost. Aardvark Recycling is proud to ensure that this compost stays in the local area by donating it to any small community groups or individuals for allotments, green spaces and gardens.

This not only benefits the community but also the environment and greatly reduces the miles of the food cycle.”

With their support we have offered a free introductory box to residents living in the Larkhall ward of Lambeth, which would otherwise have cost £9.

They have also made it possible for us to provide the fruit and vegetables for a programme of healthy eating and nutrition course run by SAZ (Sports Action), which looks at ways of planning a nutritionally balanced diet for families.

When food breaks down in landfill sites it creates the greenhouse gas methane. Methane is 20 times stronger than CO2 in terms of greenhouse gases and it can therefore have a bigger impact on climate change.

When food breaks down in landfill sites it creates the greenhouse gas methane. Methane is 20 times stronger than CO2 in terms of greenhouse gases and it can therefore have a bigger impact on climate change. Instead of sending your food waste to landfill, Aardvark Recycling collects it and turns it into high quality compost with the help of up-to-date waste technology. This compost is then used by local environmental improvement projects in deprived parts of London.

Recycling makes the best use of waste materials – including food waste. Businesses can comply with the new government regulations on pre-treatment of waste by recycling and composting. They can also save money by paying less landfill tax because they are recycling more waste materials. The present rate of landfill tax is likely to continue rising as government insists that less and less waste is sent to landfill.

A tonne of food waste deposited in landfill creates three quarters of a tonne of methane.

In 2005, landfill was the largest source of methane emissions in the UK, accounting for 700 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent (Stern Review 2006). One tonne of waste diverted from landfill equates to 720kg of methane avoidance.

We are teaming up with growing projects in Brixton to supply compost and in exchange we are hoping to supply our fruit and vegetable boxes with their first Lambeth grown produce.

We are very excited about this and we are working with The ABUNDANCE project on the Guinness Trust Estate, in Loughborough Park to supply us with rocket. If they ever have a glut of produce, this to will hopefully find its way into our boxes.

An initiative conceived by the Garden Museum will see a free garden starter kit provided to every primary school in Lambeth, in early May. Each kit will be supplied in a wooden crate personalized with the school’s name and suitable for use as a planting container.

Seeds will be supplied so that children can grow vegetables, herbs and flowers. The crates will be delivered to the schools in an eco van. The project will benefit over 60 schools and hundreds of school children. Funding from the Ernest Cook Trust has made this project possible.

Aardvark Recycling, in support of this great educational tool, are providing a bag of compost for each starter kit. Keep an eye out for updates and stories from the children about their experiences. To find out more about the Garden museum visit their website

Wolff Olins is the world’s most influential brand business, and together with Global Generations, they have created a unique green roof system with a vegetable allotment on the rooftop of their office building located in Kings Cross. The project has been implemented mainly by groups of young people from within the boroughs of Camden and Islington under the supervision of environmental and technical professionals.

Aardvark Recycling provide a collection service of food waste to the offices of Wolff Olins. To ensure a complete closed loop system for food waste, compost produced from these collections has been used to create this roof garden.

Global Generation aim to bring together people of all ages and backgrounds in practical projects, such as developing the roof garden at Wolff Olins, that are creative and educational. Projects such as these give young people a chance to empower themselves to take a lead in generating change amongst the businesses and communities where they live.

This is just one example of how food waste collections can benefit your business, support your CSR policies, engage staff and local young people as well as improve the local environment. For more information about this project please visit their website www.wolffolins.com
